From the Streets to Safety — A Story of Survival, Hope and the Power of Compassion
“The easiest target of spousal hatred is often the child—because when people stop loving you, it can show in how they treat what came from you.” Little Inyene was born into a rejection he never deserved. His parents' relationship began with a brief encounter that resulted in a pregnancy his father did not want. He wished the pregnancy would end and attempted, through violence and other means, to force Inyene's mother to terminate it. But she refused. Despite the rejection, the violence and the circumstances surrounding his conception, Inyene held on. He survived. He was born. And he deserved to live. But his struggle had only begun. When his mother later died from kidney failure, the loss of the only person who had fought for his life left him even more vulnerable. Instead of finding protection and compassion from his father, Inyene was accused of being a witch, supposedly sent to destroy his father's life. His father rejected him completely. He resisted efforts by the church, members of the community and even Inyene's own grandmother to provide support and care for the little boy. Eventually, Inyene had nowhere left to turn. So, like thousands of vulnerable children across Nigeria and many parts of Africa, he went to the streets. The Streets Became His Home Inyene learned to survive by picking scraps and helping shoppers carry heavy loads in the market for whatever little money they could offer. He was a child. But the streets forced him to live like an adult. Every day was a battle for food. Every night was a battle for survival. And then came the night that could have ended his story. A group of criminals came looking for vulnerable children on the streets. Children like Inyene are particularly exposed to traffickers and other criminal networks because they often have nobody searching for them, nobody protecting them and nowhere safe to return to. Inyene fought back. He resisted being taken. They beat him severely and threw him into a drainage channel, apparently believing they had killed him. But once again… Inyene survived. Then Someone Came Looking for Him Our paths crossed with this little boy at a moment when his life could have gone in a completely different direction. Instead of seeing another "street child," we saw a child whose life was worth fighting for. We stepped in. We provided medical attention for his injuries. We provided psychological support and therapy to help him begin processing the trauma he had endured. We provided shelter, food and care. And most importantly, we began helping him rebuild something he had been denied for far too long: HOPE. Education became part of his new beginning. Safety became possible. A future began to emerge. Little Inyene's story is not simply a story about what happened to one child. It is a warning about what can happen when vulnerable children fall through the cracks of family, community and society. And it is also a reminder of what becomes possible when someone chooses to care. But Inyene Is Not the Only One There are still children sleeping under bridges. Children scavenging through waste to find something they can sell. Children carrying loads in markets just to eat. Children who have been abandoned, rejected, abused or trafficked. Children who have no safe home to return to. Children whose only crime was being born into circumstances they did not choose. They are not statistics. They are children. They have names. They have dreams. They have potential. And they deserve a safe home, an education, protection, dignity and the opportunity to become everything they were created to be. From Hold My Hand Foundation to My Safe Home Haven For years, Hold My Hand Foundation has reached into places where vulnerable children and families desperately needed someone to care. As we transition into My Safe Home Haven, our commitment becomes even clearer: Raising the living standards of children, vulnerable women and families in dire need. Inyene represents why this mission matters. Because sometimes, saving a child does not begin with something complicated. It begins with someone saying: “I see you.” “You matter.” “Your life is worth protecting.” “You don't have to survive alone anymore.” Will You Help Us Reach the Next Inyene? We were able to change Inyene's story because someone chose to intervene. But there are many more children like him waiting for their story to change. Your support can help provide: • Safe shelter for children living on the streets • Emergency medical care • Food and basic necessities • Psychosocial support and trauma-informed care • Education and school reintegration • Child protection and family tracing • Skills development and pathways to independence • Rescue and rehabilitation for children exposed to trafficking and exploitation One child rescued is one life reclaimed. One child educated is one future restored. One child protected is one generation given a better chance. Don't Let Another Child Become a Statistic. Stand with My Safe Home Haven. Help us reach children before the streets become their home, before exploitation becomes their reality, and before a preventable tragedy becomes their story. Because every child deserves more than survival. Every child deserves a safe home. Every child deserves a future. And together, we can help make that future possible. Support the Mission. Protect a Child. Restore a Future. My Safe Home Haven Raising the Living Standards for Children, Vulnerable Women and Families in Dire Need.
